'There is nothing in the world so much like prayer as music is' ST. MARY'S CHURCH CHOIR St. Mary’s Church has a very long tradition of having their worship led by a Church Choir. In the past the Church was proud to boast of a choir which had up to thirty members. Today our numbers are more modest, but we are proud to carry on with the vital role of leading the music of the church. So What Does The Choir Do? Primarily our Choir is there to take a lead in the musical aspects of our worship, something that has been done for hundreds of years. We sing for three of the four Sunday services and we always try to have a full, four part SATB choir singing on the fourth Sunday of each month. The music we sing covers a wide range of musical styles from traditional Plainsong to the Contemporary, something for everyone. In addition to our regular Sunday duties we also sing special services throughout the year; a variety of Evening Communion Services celebrating the major Church Festivals, a full Choral Evensong and a Sung Evensong, 'Songs of Praise Service', Advent Carol Service and our annual Service of 'Nine Lessons and Carols'. In addition these we are also asked to sing for weddings and funerals where the choir is paid to attend. New Members Are Always Welcome Members, young and old, are always welcome. We don’t require you to have any previous experience, or indeed be the world's finest singer, just an enjoyment of singing and a willingness to make a commitment to come and rehearse and sing on at least the fourth Sunday of the month. We rehearse on the Friday before the fourth Sunday of each month at 18.00 in Church (or in the Church Hall if very cold!) Organist and Choirmaster Our organist is currently Alwyn Pollard. Alwyn has a long tradition of church music from his early days as a Chorister and Songman in St. Mary’s Church, Beverley, as a deputy Songman at York Minster and a current member of the ‘Wheatsheaf Consort’, Oxfordshire, Chamber Choir that regularly sings the weekend services in Cathedrals throughout England. A former Primary Head Teacher he is now the Director of Education at Burghley House. He is also the Conductor of the Cantus Choir which sings concerts and Cathedral Services all over the country.
